Here are some of our guests comments:

Kudu - © Bjørn Iuell... While we enjoyed our sundowners, the lions decided to go hunting, and caught a Nyala male right nearby, so that we had first row tickets to the lionsí feast. A feast that was somehow colored by the fact that the two young males forgot a small detail; to kill the pray before they started eating it. The lioness eventually gave up hope that they would remember all by themselves, and made short process. ...

... A great advantage to have our own car. The driving went fine, good roads, little traffic, and we were much more flexible than a lot of the other tourists that we met on the trip.
We hope to come back, and this time before another 47 years have passed.

Regards Anne-Christine and Bjørn Iuell, Norway.

… The safari was absolutely top - in our team we were extremely lucky: Cheetah - 2x leopard - wild dogs! - elephant in camp and many more wonderful sightings.

The hotel was great - and the room before departure a sight for Gods with view of the ships docking - amazing.

so – a well-satisfied bergenser - and that does take a lot

have a good day and thank you for the arrangement

Regards
Trond Ragnar, Bergen Norway.

Breakfast tableDear Elin – last night we arrived back in Sweden. This morning I woke up and wondered where I was! No noise outside my window, no sunrise over the savanna, no animals to look for. I have separation anxiety!!!

A large reason for this is what I and my companions got to experience through your/Get Africa’s arrangement. A so well planned trip from start to finish! So many experiences of different sorts. I will be terrorizing my friends with the message that if one has not experienced South Africa the way we had the opportunity to one has not lived.

Now we are starting to save for our next trip!

Elin, a great and warm thank you for letting us experience South Africa like we did!

Regards
Eva Tigerstrom, Sweden.

Hilsen Stein.

Hi Elin & Graham!
We had a safe journey home to rainy Oslo. Back here, we look back on one of our best holidays ever. We just loved South Africa! We thank you very much for all the preparations you made for us and all the help we got on our way. We are not usually being spoiled like this! And you Graham must have 6th sense for knowing when we need help. Like when you showed up at Hill Top when the receptionist lost our reservation. Or when you called us the last day, just when the girl at the reception overcharged us for the stay. That is really amazing! We did not come to Johannesburg in time to reach Soweto, but we will definitely do it next time. We will now find out more about our possibilities to come and stay in SA for a longer period and rent a house somewhere in the Cape peninsula. If this turns into reality we will let you know. Until then, thank you very much and good luck!

Hilde & Darek

Useful tips

Hide outVisa & customs: Norwegians do not have to apply for visa ahead of time. This will be issued on arrival – regular tourist visa until 3 months – no cost. There must be a minimum of two blank pages in the passport on arrival.
If you transfer to domestic flights in Johannesburg you will have to pick up your luggage here and take it through customs – then re-check it in the domestic terminal. Even if the luggage is tagged for the final destination when you first check in, you will have to pick it up in Johannesburg and re-check it – if you change flights. (Some flights fly via Johannesburg to Cape Town, but here you will stay seated in the plane until take off and the luggage will go through customs in Cape Town.)

Money: It is easy to use cards (Visa or similar). There are many atms for cash withdrawl, restaurants and shops accept cards as payment.
Not neccessary with travellers checks and dollars. Most local currancies can be exchanged directly.

Currency: Rand (Zar). Exchange rate approx. 1 Nok = 1 Zar.

Tips: Upon arrival at Johannesburg International Airport there will be plenty of people wanting to carry your luggage through to the domestic terminal. These will expect a tip, approx. 20-40 Zar depending on how much luggage there is. Be aware and keep an eye on your luggage.

Restaurants: service is included, but many waitors only earn the tips and it is usual to tip 10% ñ if the service is good with pleasure more.

Game rangers: usual to tip approx. 50,- Zar per person per safari day.

Cleaning personell: tip on day of departure, some places have communial tip-box at reception. Usual to tip approx. 50 ñ100 Zar for the stay, depending on how many people you are and how long the stay is.

Guide: Usual to tip approx. 10 - 20 Zar per person per day upon the end of the trip.

Porters at hotel: 5,- Zar per suitcase.
Please keep in mind tha many of the people working in the service industry in South Africa have very low wages and primarily live off their tips. If you experience exceptionelly good service it is nice if it is recognized.

Electricity: 220v, but three pin plugs: Hotels and guesthouses normally have adapters, in addition most of the larger grocery stores in South Africa sell the adapters cheap.

Cell Phones: Good coverage. There are only few places with no reception.

Vaccines: Tethnius, Polio and Hepatitis A is recommended: Possibly you already have these vaccines. If not: Must be taken 2 weeks before departure. Not neccessary with ìYellow cardî, in order to get a visa.

Mosquito: Low risk area in north/north-east: Kruger National Park and north in Zululand. No malaria in the rest of South Africa.

Time zone: South Africa is one hour ahead of Greenwich mean time.

What to pack

South Africa is western in the sense that most things can be bought. It is not neccessary to bring lots of "emergency kits" which one normally brings to other African countries.

  • Something warm: The nights can be very cold
  • Long sleeved shirt and pants to protect against mosquitoes after dark
  • Leisure wear: Dresscode informal
  • Bathing equipment
  • Good practical shoes
  • Binoculars
  • Suntan lotion
