WHEN should you travel to Namibia?

Namibia is a destination that can be visited all year round, but the best time is May - October. This is before the rain falls in the north and especially good time to see animals gathering at water holes.

In the period from December to March, some days will be humid and it may come rain, often with thunderstorms. April and especially May are often the best months in Namibia. This is the start of the drought, but with freshness in the air, and a lot of green in the landscape. At this time, the air is clear and largely free of dust.

From June to August, Namibia cools down and dries out. The nights can get cold in some desert areas. In September and October, the warm time starts again. This is the time when it is best for safari in most areas.

Where to travel in Namibia?

Namibia is an elongated country. You will find a rich animal life, a nature with great variation in vegetation and geology, and Namibia is especially known for its massive sand dunes against a clear blue sky. With Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland, Etosha and Windhoek you get a varied impression of what the country has to offer.

Windhoek is Namibia's largest city and capital. Being an African city, Windhoek is very clean and tidy. Here you will find a number of restaurants, shops, entertainment venues and accommodation, as well as an international airport. The city is well organized, tidy and safe. The German language is widespread here, so there are also plenty of German-inspired restaurants and shops. Windhoek has an interesting mix of historic architecture and modern buildings, many of which are worth a look. An example of this is Alte Feste (an old fort), the Christian church Christuskirche from 1896 and the modern building where the Supreme Court sits.

Etosha National Park is Namibia's best place for amazing safari experiences. The area is northwest of the country and is known for its rich wildlife. Here the vegetation varies from dense bush to open plains. At the heart of the park there is what is called "The Etosha Pan" a shallow depth of field covering an area of 5000 km2. This recess is dehydrated most of the year, but after good rain showers it fills up and is a perfect place to experience the wildlife in the area as they are drawn to the water hole.

The large, untamed, robust but incredibly beautiful Damaraland features an exceptionally scenic landscape with its open plains and spectacular rock formations. The main attractions in the area are Spitzkoppe, Brandberg, Twyfelfontein, Vingerklip and Petrified Forest. This is also the home of the heavenly people. Himbaene is a nomadic agricultural man with a very special culture.

Sossusvlei is the home of the iconic red dunes of the Namib desert. This is one of Africa's natural wonders, the contrasts with the red dunes facing the clear blue sky make this a heavenly kingdom especially for photographers. Also, head to Deadvlei with the dried-out iconic trees surrounded by red sand dunes and blue skies. Other area attractions include Sesriem Canyon and Namib-Naukluft National Park, where the Namib mountains meet the plains.

The seaside town Swakopmund is great along the Namibian coastline. The city is surrounded by the Namib Desert and by the cold Atlantic Ocean. Swakopmund was founded in 1892, as the main port of German South West Africa and is often referred to as more German in Germany. The special mix between German and Namibian atmosphere and the cool sea breeze make the city a very popular destination in Namibia. Here visitors can look forward to a number of exciting activities, including quad biking, horseback riding, paragliding, fishing, sightseeing and fascinating desert walks.
