SAFARI ALONG ZAMBEZI ELVEN

Experience exciting and diverse wilderness at Zambia's two largest rivers Zambezi and Luangwa, two vital oars for Zambia's nature and wildlife.

WHY travel to Zambia?

Zambia is still a relatively undiscovered safari destination among international tourists. Here you really get to experience the wild Africa at its best. Zambia consists of several unique national parks with rich wildlife and raw wilderness. Elin and Graham describe safaris in Zambia as: "a wildlife we have never seen before". Liuwa Plains is home to the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa and in South Luangwa they are especially known for traditional walking safaris. In Kafue you are in a Kruger National Park, but only with a fraction of the tourists.

A trip to Zambia can hardly be completed without visiting the mighty Victoria Falls. It is possible to see the waterfalls from both the Zambia and Zimbabwe side.

In Zambia, a lot of traditional art is produced such as ceramics, basket making (tonga baskets), stools, clothes, mats, wooden figures, iron carvings, wire and copper crafts. Feel free to support local art in one of the many markets.

Where to travel in Zambia?

Kafue National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Zambia. Kafue is the size of the country of Wales, but receives a fraction of the number of tourists as the Kruger National Park in South Africa. This means that the chance that you will not see other vehicles on your safari is very good. Kafue is especially known for the large herds of lions that often take down several prey on a hunt. When Elin was traveling here in October 2019, she also had an extraordinary safari experience from a hot air balloon.

Liuwa Plains is one of the oldest and most successful examples of good management and conservation of nature reserves in Africa and one of the last pristine wilderness areas with open plains and fantastic wildlife. With over 10 people living in the national park, Liuwa is a living example of how humans and wildlife can coexist and benefit each other in a common landscape. Every year, Liuwa is home to the second largest wildebeest migration on the African continent. In addition, you will find a large number of lions, hyenas, cheetahs, wild dogs and many more animal species.

Liuwa was chosen as one of the top 52 destinations to visit in 2018 by the renowned New York Times newspaper.

Liuwa Plains is also home to the world-famous lioness with a very special story, Lady Liuwa. After many years of unrest in the area, civil war in Angola and trophy hunting, Lady Liuwa survived against all odds as the only lioness in Liuwa. For nine whole years she lived alone and moved to the villages to seek the company of people. It is said that she is a reincarnation of the local queen.

Lady Liuwa was the one who looked after the kids when the other mothers were hunting. She has never attacked humans or domestic animals, a wisdom she has now passed on to the young lions in the area. Elin and Graham met the lioness when they were here in 2017. Later that year, the lioness died after 17 years, for completely natural reasons. Read the full story of Lady Liuwa here.

South Luangwa is one of the most beautiful national parks in Africa, with a unique wildlife and magnificent landscape. Here are good opportunities to see the usually shy leopard. This is the wild Africa at its best! Several of the camps we use here are set up on a seasonal basis and leave no marks in nature. South Luangwa National Park is especially known for its walking safaris: which allow you to get up close to elephant, hippopotamus and lions under the supervision of professional and knowledgeable armed guides.

Lower Zambezi is located on the north bank of the Zambezi River, and has a dense concentration of animals and a landscape that is exceptionally beautiful. Here you can experience safaris from the river and try tiger fishing ("catch and release").

Victoria Falls or "Mosi-oa-Tunya" ("The smoke that thunders"), is almost mandatory if you travel in Zambia. This is the "heart" of Africa and one of the few places in the world where four countries meet: Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Botswana. Victoria Falls is considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world and is undeniably an experience of a lifetime.

WHEN should you travel to Zambia?

Zambia is characterized by seasons of drought and rainy season. The temperature in summer varies from 25 ° C to 35 ° C and in winter from 6 ° C to 24 ° C.

The "dry season" is from May to October and is the best time for safaris. During this period, the temperature is also comfortable during the day (although in September and October it can get very hot). In the period March to June, there is most water and pressure in the waterfalls and Victoria Falls is at its finest.

“The rainy season” starts from December to April. This period is called "Green Season" and is characterized by the vegetation becoming dense and the animals more difficult to find as there is water to drink everywhere. During this period there are also some safari lodges that have to close due to flooding.

GET Africa Travel recommends traveling in Zambia during the period from April to November.

Combine pristine nature and spectacular safaris in Zambia with relaxing days on beautiful Lake Malawi with white beaches and beautiful sunsets. A perfect combination! Read more about this journey here…
