My first meeting with Malawi was in 2013. And it was a full flap from the first second. Everything that is "Africa" to me is found in Malawi: Pulsating people, energy, heat, nature and wildlife.

Since 2013, there have been more trips there. Among other things, I took Graham on a tour of some of the most romantic places I can imagine. Imagine being "stranded" on an island far out in Lake Malawi, paddling into the sunset, waking up to the call of a osprey and diving into crystal clear waters with 1000s of aquarium fish. The name Malawi means "flames" in the local language Chichewa and refers to the light reflections from Lake Malawi.

The heart of Africa

Malawi is truly the heart of Africa. Look at the map of Africa: A little to the left below the chest and there lies the land. It is totally "landlocked", ie no coastline. The country lies like an elongated gut with Zambia in the west, Tanzania in the north and Mozambique in the south and east.

It is mainly the people who take hold of the root of the heart. Along the country road there is a steady stream of people cycling. The people are friendly and the children are incredibly curious about tourists who come from far and wide. And it's good, because there is a long way between proper toilet options, a "pee break" at the edge of the ditch without spectators is almost impossible.

Without a bike, Malawi stops

"There are nine million bicycles in Beijing", - sings Katie Melua and the song could have been about Malawi. The country has almost 20 million inhabitants, but no one knows how many bicycles there are, there are many. In the absence of good roads and car transport, bicycles are a better way to get around than on foot. Here you will find bicycle taxis, bicycle vans and yes sick bicycles! None of the other countries in southern Africa has a similar cycling phenomenon. A useful tip if you are planning a bike ride: A typical Malawi bike does not have brakes, because you brake with your legs. This is an expensive experience a couple of our guests have had. Fortunately, it has gone well.

Lake Malawi, an aquarium

The fact that Malawi is surrounded by land mass is compensated in return by the fact that 20% of the country is Lake Malawi. The almost 60 km long lake is the world's 9th largest and is just over 700 meters deep. You can not travel to Malawi without spending a few days on Lake Malawi. Especially in the southern part of the lake, snorkeling and diving opportunities are good. The fish are colorful. In Lake Malawi there are around 1000 different species and new ones are constantly being discovered.

Safari destination?

The neighbors of Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia are undeniably better known for the great safari experiences. Safari in Malawi is still definitely recommended. The unique thing about Malawi is the combination of water and land. Hippos, waders, many different species of antelope, lions, rhinos and elephants.

But no giraffes. Why is not entirely clear either. One explanation among the locals is that the giraffes did not manage to get over the Nyka mountain plateau which borders Tanzania. I will never forget the experience where I flew from the tropical heat and beach life on Likoma Island in Lake Malawi to land at an altitude of 2.500 meters on the plateau - that sleet! The sun hat was quickly replaced with a hat and scarf. In this area there are large flocks of Africa's largest antelope: Eland. However, this is not a safari for first-time travelers.

It is, however, Liwonde National Park. Here is one of my favorite lodges: Mvuu lodge. The lodge is beautifully located with cabins facing the river. It is certainly not uncommon to have hippos visiting around the cabin wall at night.

It was Prince Harry then too

On one of my stays at Mvuu Lodge we had such a large group that all the rooms were occupied. I was therefore assigned a small cabin outside the camp where usually the personnel at the lodge live. Just beyond the cabin was a tent camp. I was told that there was a major operation underway: Moving 500 elephants to further north in the country. Elephants can be destructive to vegetation when they become too numerous. One of the most ardent proponents of the project was Prince Harry. It is extra exciting to fall asleep to the sounds of the African night with a prince snoring in a tent a few meters away.

I caught a glimpse of the prince on his way in the jeep and in full swing on his way to a waiting helicopter, but we never got closer than that. You really leave your heart in Malawi, but not to a prince.

Hopefully this was a good story that gave more taste to experience the pearl of Africa: Malawi!

Malawi is a gem and can be nicely combined with several destinations. Each guest is greeted with smiles and warmth from the locals. Do you have questions about Malawi or want a non-binding travel proposal? Contact us…
